# The institution's signature on the contract

> How to put the school's signature on the document, and what shows up when it is not configured.

## What you will get

The contract coming out with the school's signature at the foot, without anyone
printing and signing each one.

There are **three things** to fill in, and they do not live on the contract
template — they live under **Settings › Contracts**.

## The three pieces

| What it is | Where it goes in the contract |
|---|---|
| The signature **image** | `%institution_signature%` |
| The **name** of whoever signs | `%institution_signer_name%` |
| That person's **role** | `%institution_signer_role%` |

Fill all three under **Settings › Contracts** and use the variables at the foot of
the template. The default template already has all three in place.

## About the image

The system shrinks the image to fit the signature space — at most 220 pixels wide
by 80 tall. Two practical consequences:

- **A signature scanned on a white background becomes a white rectangle** sitting
on the contract. Prefer a PNG with a transparent background.
- **A very large image gains you nothing.** It will be shrunk either way.

The simplest route is to sign on white paper, photograph it, crop to the stroke
alone and save as PNG.

## When it is not configured

Nothing breaks. The three variables simply come out empty, and the contract is
left with a blank signature space — ready to be signed by hand once printed.

That is a valid choice: a school that prints and signs physically does not need
the image.

## What this is not

**The institution's signature is not a certified electronic signature.** It is
the image of the school's mark on the document, like a stamp.

What gives the contract legal weight is the **student's** signature — the
electronic acceptance, with date, time and the origin of the access recorded, or
the signed document sent back.

## How you know it worked

> [certo]
> Open the template's **Preview**: in place of `%institution_signature%` the
> signature mark appears, with the name and role you registered beneath it. On a
> test enrolment, the image appears for real.

## If something goes wrong

> [erro]
> **The image came out with a white rectangle around it.** The file has a
> background. Save it as PNG with a transparent background.
>
> **The signature came out very small.** The space is capped at 220 by 80 pixels.
> Crop the image tight to the stroke, with no margin left over.
>
> **The name shows but the image does not.** Check that the file really was saved
> under **Settings › Contracts** — the three pieces are independent.
>
> **You want different signatures per course.** You cannot: there is one signature
> per school, set in settings.
