# I hit the student limit — what stops and how to fix it

> The exact message, what keeps working, what the import does silently, and the three ways out.

## What you will get

Back to registering students today — and an understanding of why the operation
did **not** stop as a whole.

## The message

Clicking **Register Student** returns you to the list with a red banner:

![Red banner with the student limit reached notice](/Apps/edupay/ajuda/conta-limite-atingido.png)
*The number in brackets is your plan's limit, not the total you have. The screenshot is from the Portuguese panel; the layout is the same in English.*

The message is **Student limit reached (26). Upgrade your plan to add more.**

It appears at both moments: opening the form and trying to save. There is no way
round it by reaching the screen another way.

## What keeps working

Almost everything. The limit blocks **one** verb: creating a new student.

- **Enrolling** students who already exist — normal.
- **Charging, issuing, receiving, reconciling** — normal.
- **Editing** a student record — normal.
- **Contracts and signatures** — normal.

In other words: you do not lose the month. You lose new student intake.

## The spreadsheet import does not warn the same way

**It does not refuse the file. It imports what fits and skips the rest.**

The summary at the end carries a separate count of those left out by the limit. If
you import 40 students with 4 slots free, 4 go in and 36 are skipped — with no red
error, just a number in the summary.

**Check that number.** It is where a whole class disappears without anyone
noticing.

## The three ways out

**1. Change plan.** The real answer when the school has grown. The **Upgrade to
keep growing** link on the panel card is the route.

**2. Clear out records that never became anything.** A deleted student **does not
occupy a slot**. A prospect who never enrolled, a duplicate, an old test: deleting
frees space immediately, and the deletion can be undone.

**3. Check for duplicates.** A school that imported a spreadsheet more than once
usually has the same student twice — and both occupy slots.

> **Marking someone Inactive does not help.** Inactive still counts. What frees a
> slot is deleting.

## Two minutes well spent before changing plan

Open the student list and look at the total. Then open the enrolment filters and
see how many of them never enrolled. The gap tends to surprise — and it tends to
be bigger than the headroom you need.

## How you know it worked

> [certo]
> The **Students** card on the panel shows headroom again, the red pill
> disappears, and the register button works.

## If something goes wrong

> [erro]
> **I deleted students and the card did not change.** Reload the panel: the number
> is counted when the screen is built.
>
> **The message names a smaller limit than my plan.** The number in brackets is
> what is configured on your plan. If it does not match what you contracted, that
> is a support ticket.
>
> **I need to register a student today and cannot change plan now.** Use way 2:
> one deletion frees one slot immediately.
